From jsimpson@stny.rr.com Sun May 16 01:50:54 1999 Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 23:32:59 -0400 (EDT) From: "Jeremy Impson (Not Simpson)" Newsgroups: stny.roadrunner.linux Subject: MINUTES from the April 13, 1999 STNY LUG meeting The April 13, 1999 meeting was held at Krisotofer's on Main St. in Endicott. It commenced promptly at 7pm. Your faithful recorder had to leave at 9 pm (he had 6 more hours of work ahead of him, and didn't get home until after 3am). I did not take notes. My sincerest apolgies. We joked quite a bit at this meeting--some of us were on a role, especially Mongo with the one-line zingers. We enjoyed the food, drink, and ambiance of Kristofor's non-smoking session. We also talked about the future of the group. Two takes on a very good idea were mentioned: we should perhaps arrange a certain time (say, an hour) where novice Linux users could come and ask questions of the experts. It would be nice to have a portable laptop to use in such a situation. Similarly, a more technical session would be nice, including perhaps some actual code hacking. Perhaps a group project? (I think Joel mentioned this some time ago.) It was also requested by myself that someone take notes (and type them up) from various lectures presented, so that we can place them on the web site. In this way, the web site can serve as the record of the grouth of the group. We can ascert that, as a LUG, we "know" these things, and can point to them as reference. Rich Weber has some ideas about the future of the web site, and I'm sure we will discuss them in the future. It was suggested that we appoint a note-taker for the formal sessions. Perhaps this is a good idea, on a round-robin basis. Present at this joyous occasion were: Jeremy D. Impson (I get to be first this time) Clayton Duffek Clayton's friend, whose name escapes me (many apologies) Stephen Paine Michael W. Lurie Joel Tleon Mongo Paul M. Bucalo Paul's Associate, whose name also escapes me (Rick DuBrava is so good about taking attendance, but sadly he was not present) The next meeting will held April 27, 1999. Stay tuned here for the announcement, or contact me directly. The topics for the next meeting will: bash vs ksh vs csh vs tcsh (this time I mean it) and a lecture from Perfesser Jeremy D. Impson on how to find the answers to technical questions on the Internet. Jeremy has almost 5 years experience in such matters and knows quite a lot of stuff. If you listen to him long enough, you'll be able to tell that he truly is full of it. Also, time allowing, we will discuss the use of that wonderful network tool, netcat. Otherwise, we will talk about it and nmap at the following formal meeting.
